Encounter can be symbolized by the image of an eye. Email, BlackBerries, texting and videoconferencing are all fabulous assets. But direct, face-to-face communication remains the ‘gold standard’ for relating. So how far, and how often, do you and your team engage in direct interaction? Important relationships, and important situations, stand in particular demand of directness – hence the finding by the Leadership Trust that more than half of managers find it more difficult to motivate and lead remote workers than other employees. A staff grievance can’t be solved by emailing from the other side of the world.
